George Rochberg "To the Dark Wood", Arioso Woodwind Quintet, John Lorge, Horn
John S Lorge
John Lorge was born in Oshkosh Wisconsin in 1956. John began musical studies with the piano at the age of 3. He desired to play Tuba in the sixth grade but his band director was in need of a French Horn. During his High School years in addition to being a budding composer and great horn player he also performed as choral lead in many musicals. He majored in music at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Lorge was principal horn of the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera 1987-2007. He joined the San Diego Symphony in 1978. John was called to play often with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Milwaukee Symphony and St Paul Chamber Orchestra. John performed with Los Angeles recording sessions for TV and Motion Pictures.
His movie credits include: Alien Resurrection, The Siege, The Negotiator, Collateral Damage, She’s So Lovely, and others. Lorge has also recorded for ‘made for TV movies’ such as, The Bella Mafia, The Life & Times of Emiliano Zapata and others, as well as TV commercials. He is included on recordings for several pop artists including Barry Manilow, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Sammy Nestico, Harry Connick Jr. and Christina Aguilerra. He had played lead horn in the TV production of the Annual Emmy
Awards for eleven years. Lorge has also served as soloist and chamber artist extensively over his career. In September 2005, Lorge performed the Horn Concerto #1 of Richard Strauss with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra (now Orchestra NOVA) to critical acclaim. He has been a part of that orchestra since 1983. As a member of the woodwind quintet, Arioso, he received
accolades from their divine recordings.
His compositions for the San Diego Symphony and chamber ensembles across the nation have been received with enthusiastic ears. John, part Menominee Indian, (his wife part Ojibwa) composed an incredible Tone poem in 2002, “Ginan Nishnabe” played by the San Diego Symphony that met with critical acclaim from both the audiences and critics. Lorge has composed for that Symphony as early as 1985. His "Tuba Concerto” premiered in 1993 with Matthew Garbutt as soloist and Maestro Yoav Talmi conducting. In 1998, his “Jubilations for Orchestra” opened the winter season with Maestro Jung-Ho Pak conducting.
That work was repeated in October 2001 again to open the winter season. He was asked by the late Neil Kjos to compose 3 works for band. In 2003 three new works were premiered in various locales. The “Nonet for Winds and Strings” was played in Tijuana Baja California Mexico under the baton of Eduardo Diazmunoz with the Orchesta de Baja California. The “Concerto for Horn and Strings” was premiered at Indiana University by Lorge’s very gifted student, John Manganaro. In March (2003), “Alex’s
Bones” was played at San Diego State University by Alex Panos, a fine graduate student at the University. Lorge has also arranged music for many ensembles including the San Diego Symphony and Alan Paul of the Manhattan Transfer. Lorge has arranged much music for Horn Quartet and Brass quintet. These works are published by“Reallygoodmusic.com.”
John also composed a number of pieces for Camarada, including “Critters”, “New Rule” and others. John’s most recent arrangements have focused on the ensemble, Hornswoggle. In the spring of 2012 John was placed in the position of conductor and arranger of the La Jolla Brass.
